How to estimate your body fat percentage from a photo
How to take the photo, what each range looks like, and how to get your body fat % dialed in to 2 points.
If you train, sooner or later you ask yourself "what's my body fat percentage?". A DEXA scan means a trip to a clinic, the gym scale swings with how hydrated you are, and skinfolds depend on who takes them. The quickest option is a photo. A good photo puts you in a 2-point range, and that is enough to tell whether you are trending down or up.
1. How to take a photo that works
- Face the camera, arms relaxed and a little away from your body.
- Daylight, from the front or a soft side. Avoid a light right above your head: it throws shadows on your stomach.
- No filter, no beauty mode, and don't brace your abs.
- Head to mid-thigh, or full body. Shirtless or in fitted clothes.
- Phone at chest height, in the same spot every time.
- Away from your workout: a pump makes you look fuller and leaner. Wait an hour if you can.
- Only you in the photo.

2. What each range looks like (men)
These bands are a visual guide, not rules, and they follow the ranges BodyScan uses. The BodyScan result is not a band: it is a tighter range of just 2 points. Two people at the same percentage can look different depending on their muscle, their height and where they store fat.
| Band | Level | Abs | Rest of the body |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10% | Very lean | Abs visible at rest, lower abs included; obliques show. | Close to stage shape; veins on the arms and sometimes the shoulders; a very angular face. Hard to hold. |
| 10–12% | Lean | Abs visible in almost any light; lower abs less sharp. | Clear shape in shoulders and arms, forearm veins, a defined jaw. |
| 13–16% | Athletic | Some abs in good light; upper abs more than lower. | A gym look in good light; people can tell you train with a T-shirt on; some softness on the sides. |
| 17–19% | Fit | Flat or nearly flat; no lines at rest. | Training shows, with less detail at the waist; a fuller face. |
| 20–24% | Average | Flat or slightly rounded; belly visible from the side. | Clothes fit well, but the waist tends to be the focus; little separation between muscles. |
| 25–31% | Above average | Clearly rounded stomach. | Muscle outlines blur; fat on the sides, chest and lower back. |
| 32% or more | High | Prominent stomach. | Fat shows in any clothes. |

3. The limits of estimating from a photo
A photo gives a visual estimate, not a measurement. It is not a DEXA scan, it does not diagnose anything and it is not medical advice.
- Light and angle: harsh light from above or a phone held too low changes what shows.
- Muscle: a lot of muscle often looks leaner than you are, and the other way round.
- What the photo misses: a front photo does not show the lower back or the glutes.
- Pump and bloating: you can look different in the morning and after training on the same day.
- No home method is exact. Scales, skinfolds and photos give different numbers. What works is picking one and following the trend under the same conditions.
4. How to use BodyScan
- Take the photo following the steps above.
- Go to Scan your photo and upload it (JPG, PNG or WebP). If you like, add sex, age, height, weight and goal: it is optional and helps narrow things down.
- Confirm you are 18 or older and that the photo is of you, then tap Analyze my photo. It usually takes under 15 seconds. BodyScan doesn't store the photo.
- Leave your email to see your result: a 2-point range, your physique level and a confidence note. Free.
- Repeat in a few weeks with the same kind of photo and compare.
FAQ
Can you tell your body fat percentage from a photo?
Yes, as a visual estimate, not an exact measurement. A photo can place you in a 2-point range based on what shows: abs, waist, shoulders and face. Light, pose and muscle move the range, so take the photo the same way every time.
What does 15% body fat look like on a man?
In good light, many men near 15% show some abs, though not always a clear six-pack. The waist is tighter and, if you lift, shoulders and arms show. Two men at the same percentage can look different depending on their muscle and where they store fat.
How should I take the photo to estimate my body fat?
Face the camera with your arms relaxed. Daylight, no harsh shadows on your stomach. No filter and don't brace your abs. Head to mid-thigh, or full body. Phone at chest height. Only you in the photo. If you just trained, wait an hour: a pump makes you look leaner.
Why does the gym scale give me a different number than a photo?
Because they measure different things. A bioimpedance scale changes with how hydrated you are; a photo only sees the outside. It is normal for them not to match. What helps is picking one method and following the trend under the same conditions.
What result does BodyScan give?
A 2-point body fat range, your physique level and a confidence note. It is free: you upload the photo, the AI analyzes it and you leave your email to see the result.
Does BodyScan store my photo?
No. BodyScan doesn't store it: it is sent to our AI provider (Google Gemini) only for the estimate, under that provider's own terms. It does not appear on the share card.
Is BodyScan a medical measurement?
No. It is a visual estimate from a photo. It is not a DEXA scan and it cannot diagnose anything. If you have a health concern, talk to a doctor.
